San Antonio Holidays Overview
San Antonio is the second biggest city in Texas with a population of more than 2 million people in the greater metropolitan area. Roughly 64% of the population is white, followed by Latin Americas who compose 30%. Non-Latino blacks and others account for the remainder of the inhabitants. Several tourist attractions and events make tourism one of the pillars of the local economy.
In the 1700s, San Antonio was the largest Spanish population centre in Texas. In 1821, after Mexican independence from Spain, US pioneers were invited to settle in this Mexican territory. After the 1824 suspension of the Mexican Constitution, Texans along with many other Mexicans were outraged. Texans forced Mexico to withdraw.
It was not until 1836 after putting down other rebellions, that Mexico returned, overrunning the defenses of San Antonio in the Battle of the Alamo. In 1845, Texas was annexed to the US. The ensuing Mexican American War, put an end to disputes between the neighbouring nations, annexing vast territories to the US. San Antonio was on the front line and was decimated in the process. In the late 1870s, the railroad reached this city, ending its relative isolation.
There are several museums and cultural centres here. College and professional sports teams play here as well, including in basketball and soccer. The college American Football’s Alamo Bowl is played here annually in December. There is an insufficient metropolitan transit system composed of buses and streetcars. An extensive number of parks within the city provide abundant recreation facilities.
Today a broad variety of malls, boutiques and flea markets can be found in this sprawling city. Hundreds of restaurants serve at least a dozen varieties of cuisine. Accommodations are wide ranging from luxury hotels, motor inns to campgrounds and primitive cabin areas in the woods near the city. There is an undersea theme park and an amusement park as well as outdoor attractions such as hot air balloon tours or an escape into rural Hill Country.
