Rotorua Holidays Overview
Rotorua city is located in the central part of the North Island, on the southern shore of Lake Rotorua, in the Bay of Plenty region. Rotorua is a 3 hour drive from Auckland, at 234 km and a 5 or 6 hour drive, at 457 km, from Wellington. Rotorua is best known for its geothermal activity which has produced geysers, hot waterfalls, hot springs and hot mud pools. This geothermal activity gives Rotorua its distinctive sulphurish smell and has given it its nickname of Sulphur City. Rotorua is also known as being the heartland of Maori culture. Roturua has 16 crater lakes produced from extinct volcanoes, some with brown and rainbow trout. These lakes are extremely popular for water sports and activities. Rotorua has many things to see and do including trout fishing, forest walks, Maori culture to experience, museums and galleries, beautiful surrounding National Parks, and of course all the natural wonders created by the geothermal activity.
