Raleigh-Durham Holidays Overview
The Research Triangle area of North Carolina is in the state’s Piedmont area. It is composed of 8 counties in all. It is anchored by the population centres of Chapel Hill, Raleigh and Durham. Fourteen colleges and universities are located in this area. The population totals approximately 1.7 million people. The name Triangle area began to be used in the 1950s when the Research Triangle Park was first built. The research area is home to various high-tech companies. Triangle Transit coordinates the separate municipal transit systems in the area which are bus-based. There have been attempts to develop a light rail system which have not been successful to date due to failures to find adequate funding. There are several large shopping centres and malls in the area. The Raleigh based Carolina Hurricanes hockey team is the only professional sports team in the area. There are notable college teams however, and college basketball is nationally notorious here. A number of galleries and museums can be found in Raleigh, the largest city in the area and capital of the state. There are a number of neighbourhoods known for entertainment in the area. The Warehouse District of Raleigh is one of the quirkier areas. The largest selection of beers, live music and late night hot spots are in this area to the far west of downtown Raleigh. Moore Square in the southeast has cobblestone streets and many pubs and eateries. Chapel Hill however, is where some of the best eateries can be found. Durham’s Morehead Hill boasts a variety of architecture styles dating back to the 1880s, when several industrialists settled in the area. Many of the oldest homes are no longer standing but several do still remain. Old tobacco manufacturing warehouses are found here. The area’s economic development was originally based on the tobacco industry, founded by Sir Walter Raleigh on behalf of the English crown. It still palys a large role today.
