The city of Pune is the 8th largest city in India and the second largest in the Indian state of Maharashtra. It is the capital of the district of Pune and is situated where the Mula and Mutha rivers converge. The city has been known to exist since 937 AD. It was founded by Shivaji Raje, the founder of the Marathi Empire. In the early 16th century, Pune was an important political centre as the headquarters of the Prime Minister of the Chhatrapati of Satara. After being annexed by the British in 1817, it became the capital of the Bombay presidency until the independence of India in 1947.
The city is today a major educational centre with over 100 colleges and nine fully accredited universities. Furthermore, it has a well established and thriving manufacturing sector. The automotive and software sectors are particularly vibrant and are provided the highest economic growth for the city and region in general.
Pune has a population of 3.5 million people and has a literacy rate of over 80%. The official language is Marathi though English and Hindi are also widely spoken. The majority of the population are Brahmins though there is also a substantial Muslim population.
The climate in Pune is predominantly wet and dry with three distinct seasons. Summer runs from march to may while June to October is a monsoonal season. Winter runs from November to April.

The Ganesh Festival is held every year in the month of August. Ganesh refers to the elephant headed son of the Hindu god shiva and Parvati. During this time families come together to eat a sweet known as “modak” said to have been loved by the god. There are theatre shows, art and musical performances that enthral.
Another crowd puller is the Pune International film Festival which takes place every January. It attracts a number of excellent films from around the world and lasts for one week. Film lovers are treated to a screening of popular films from all over the world.
