Proserpine Holidays Overview
Proserpine is located 1100 km north of Brisbane, and just 40 km in from the coast of Airlie Brach, and is literally a stepping stone to the Whitsundays. The area was settled by Europeans in 1861, and originally Proserpine's economy was from sugar cane. Today, sugar cane still plays a large part in the town's industry=try, but today the town is also used as a major link for all of the Whitsundays. Proserpine has a population under 5000. Besides heading for the Whitsundays there are activities to do in and around the town. The sugar mill, which is one of the most modern in the world, has guided tours from June to November when the crushing season is on. There is a Cultural Centre displaying local Aboriginal artifacts, and there is a historic steam locomotive. Lake Proserpine provides water activities including water skiing, and there are National Parks providing walking and scenery. Proserpine has many art deco buildings in the main street to add a little character, and also has a hospital, schools, tennis, bowls, golf, squash, and a library.
