Porto (Oporto) Holidays Overview
Porto is the economic capital of Northern Portugal and is situated at the mouth of the River Douro on the west coast. The hilly centre of Porto, known at the Ribeira district, is a maze of twisting lanes, old churches and steep staircases, and is a UNESCO World Heritage Zone. The city is currently undergoing a period of urban renewal and regeneration, and has a modern new metro system. Porto is a centre for arts and architecture, with two key attractions in Alvaro Siza Vieira’s Contemporary Art Museum and Rem Koolhaas’ Casa da Musica. Across the river from Porto itself is Vila Nova de Gaia, which is technically a different city, but contributes greatly to the charms of Porto. It is the best place to sample the famous port of the region, and has a vibrant nightlife, with plenty of clubs and restaurants along the river.
