Port Moresby Holidays Overview
Port Moresby is both the capital and largest city of Papua New Guinea and is 2094 km from Brisbane. Port Moresby lies on the south eastern coast of New Guinea on the Gulf of Papua. Port Moresby was first discovered by a European, Captain John Moresby in 1873, but the Motu-Koitabu people had been living there for hundreds of years. Many of the men from PNG were enlisted in WW11 as soldiers or carriers for the Allied forces. Port Moresby was an important Ally base and thousands of troops were stationed there while the war with the Japanese raged on. After WW11 basically the entire town of Port Moresby was rebuilt. In recent times Port Moresby has become an extremely troubled and violent city. The Australian Government has warned visitors planning on going to Port Moresby that there is a high level of serious crime, including rape, murder, carjackings, robbery, and kidnapping. You should maintain a high degree of caution as crime rates are high. Cholera has also become an issue in Papua New Guinea. Taxis and hire cars are not recommended for tourists. Hotels should be able to arrange tourist buses. It is not recommended that you go out at night.

The Hiri Moale Festival is an annual event celebrated every September in Port Moresby. It is now the main festival for Port Moresby and celebrates cultural and trading links. This festival stems back to the Motu people who would build large multi hull lagatoi canoes and sail west into the Gulf of Papua to exchange clay pots for sago with the Erema people. This was a dangerous but necessary trip, and originally the celebration was to honour the return of the voyagers. This traditional Hiri trade existed until about 60-70 years ago. The Hiri Moale Festival demonstrates the cultural diversities of the region. Traditional dances, rituals and body decorations are all on display in this festival. The festival rakes place at Ela Beach.
