Port Hedland is 1761 km north from Perth, which translate to a 2-3 day drive. Port Hedland lies in the Pilbara region of Western Australia and is a stepping stone to both Broome and the Kimberley. The town was discovered in 1863 by Capt Hedland, and its history includes pearling.
Since the 1960's Port Hedland has become one of the biggest and busiest of all the mineral ports in the world, and is the main port for Pilbara iron ore. Port Hedland is an industrial town that extracts, processes, and exports iron ore from the surrounding deposits. The BHP Billiton Iron Ore Nelson Point crushing and shipping facility is a major feature of the town.
Port Hedland is a fishing paradise with whiting, bream, mullet, skippy, and kingfish on offer. The dense mangroves are also home large mud crabs. Nesting flatback turtles and whales can be observed in the appropriate seasons. An easy drive away are the Karijini and Millstream National Parks.
There are many attractions for the Port Hedland visitor including the Port Hedland Cultural and Heritage Trail, The Royal Flying Doctor Base, Two Mile Ridge Aboriginal carvings, the Pioneer and Pearler's Cemetery, and Redbank Bridge lookout. The Stairway to the Moon is a great spectacle and occurs when a full moon rises over a low tide, giving an impression of steps leading to the moon. This can usually be seen between April and October.
