The name is Sanskrit which literally translates to “city of men”. It was at one time under Greek influence before being conquered by Arabs and becoming an Islamic city. The city currently has a population of about 3 million with an annual growth rate of roughly 3%. The majority ethnic group in Peshawar are Pashtuns and Peshawaris. Other groups found in Peshawar include Tajiks, Uzbeks, Punjabis, Persians, Hazaras, Chitralis and Gypsies. The main languages spoken in Peshawar are Pushto, Urdu and Punjabi. The city is a centre of Pashto music, book publishing in Persian as well as Dari music. The hottest months in Peshawar are from may to September when temperatures fluctuate between 25 degrees and 40 degrees Celsius. The coldest months are November through to March. Rainfall is modest in this region of Pakistan. Ever since the war against the Al Qaeda terrorist organization begun, the northern regions of Pakistan have become very unsafe and volatile.
