Penang Holidays Overview


George Town is the capital of the Malaysian State of Penang. The city is named after Britain’s King George III. Located on the east corner of the island of Penang, the city was founded in 1786 by the British East India Company. Francis Light, a trader with the company, obtained the island from the sultan of Kedah. Initially, Fort Cornwallis was built at the site but the area soon grew into a large trading post.
The city of George Town has been internationally recognized in a number of fora. To begin with, the inner city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site due to its unique architecture and culture. George Town has also made it top the top ten list of Asiaweek magazine’s ranking of the Top Ten Places where Europeans prefer to live and work in Asia.
Most of the inhabitants of George Town are of Chinese origin. Other major groups include Malays and Indians. The city currently has a population of about 300, 000 people. It is multi cultural and multi religious; many different communities live side by side in perfect harmony.
The weather is pleasant all year and apart from the occasional tropical monsoons typical of this part of the world, it usually sunny throughout.

Penang holidays - Top Events

The Penang World Music Festival is major event in George Town. During this festival held every March, chefs showcase their culinary abilities to the world. There is a lot of fun with food eating competitions and talent shows.
The Thaipusam festival held annually is real spectacle especially to somebody witnessing it for the first time. It is a period when devotees of Hindu Lord Murugan commemorate his birthday and the destruction of an evil spirit. Numerous Hindus in trance like state pierce carry offerings that are pierced to their bodies as offerings.

Direct flights from Australian cities to George Town are rare though a number of airlines operate direct flights to Malaysia’s capital, Kuala Lumpur. The main airlines are Air Asia, Qantas, Alitalia, Philippine Airlines, Air India and Malaysia Airlines. Major departure cities in Australia are Perth, Melbourne, Gold Coast, Sydney and Brisbane. It takes an average of 8 hours to fly from Sydney or Melbourne to Kuala Lumpur and another 30 minutes to Penang.
