Parkes Holidays Overview
Parkes is located in the middle of New South Wales, about 265 km west of Sydney. Parkes began as a gold mining town, known as Bushmans, when gold was discovered there in 1871. The town was renamed Parkes in 1873, to commemorate a visit by the Governor Henry Parkes in the same year. The main industries for the 10,500 inhabitants of Parkes are mining and farming. Large copper and gold mines were re-opened in the 1990's injecting huge amounts of capital into the local communities. The town of Parkes became a town of interest after the Australian movie "The Dish" was released, featuring the CSIRO's radio telescope which is located 20 km outside of Parkes. The town of Parkes is situated on the Newell Highway, and can also be accessed by train, and a plane service out of Sydney. The town of Parkes has many places of interest including museums, which reflect the town's history of mining and farming.
