Paraburdoo Holidays Overview
Paraburdoo is 1536 km north east of Perth, and lies in the Pilbara region. Paraburdoo was purpose built in 1970 as a town to house the miners and families of Hammersley Iron. The town is no longer a closed company town, but the majority of the 2500 population are linked to the surrounding mines. The economy of this small town is based solely on mining. The town has a hospital, college, shops, and a hotel /motel. Paraburdoo owes its name to 2 Aboriginal terms which when put together loosely translate as 'meat feathers', due to the large numbers of white corellas living in the area. The temperature in Paraburdoo can be very hot or very cold with a maximum record of over 48° C and a minimum of 1.5° C, surely not on the one day. Paraburdoo is a steeping stone to Karijina National Park and the nearby town of Tom Price. The natural scenery is rugged and extreme. There is native wildlife to be seen, and after the rains the barren landscape becomes alive with masses of blooming native wildflowers.

The Nameless Festival is held on the second weekend of August each year in the nearby town of Tom Price. The entire community becomes involved with holding stalls, constructing floats for the parade, or entering into the King of the Mountain race. There is also a themed ball, fireworks display, a street parade, novelty games and races, a sideshow, and arts and crafts exhibits. The King of the Mountain is a race that attracts athletes from out of town, and involves running to the top of Mount Nameless which is 1047 metres above sea level. Rio Tinto Picnic Day is an annual event usually held in October for all the residents of Paraburdoo and Tom Price. This is a free event for all town residents and features a variety of food stalls and cold drinks. Both towns enthusiastically support this picnic.
