Palm Springs Holidays Overview
Palm Springs, California, is located in the desert 177 km east of Los Angeles in Riverside County. It is at the base of the Mount San Jacinto Mountains. Of its approximately 42,000 inhabitants, roughly 70% are white, 20% Latin American and the rest of other groups and mixed descent. Archaeological findings indicate that aboriginal people, the Cahuilla, lived here since at least 350 years ago. Some believe their ancestors had been here since 2,000 years ago. The first permanent white settlers came in 1884. Within 2 years, the first hotel was erected. It was not until post WWII that big growth began as a resort area. Since the late 1970s, after attracting many retirees, this has become a year round community. The Visitors Center offers guides and brochures to tourists. The casinos and winter tourists fuel much of the economy for working people here in the Coachella Valley. The entire valley can be seen from ascending the Aerial Tramway which rises more than 2,500 metres above the desert below. A restaurant and park are located at the summit above the tram. There are a variety of luxury hotels, historic bed & breakfast buildings and RV camping parks. Various fine restaurants serve cuisine. There are hundreds of dining options in all. Many upscale boutique stores are open for shoppers in this city. Several golfing and other sporting events occur throughout the year. There is a non professional baseball team and an Arizona Winter League Team that play here. There is nearby mountain hiking and bike trails. It is sunny here 350 days a year, making outdoor recreation a practically permanent option. There are a few wildlife reserves just outside of town. A dozen museums are in and around Palm Springs. They celebrate art, history and local heritage. There are some 2 dozen performing and visual art and cinema venues in Palm Springs and the surrounding valley.
