Palermo Holidays Overview
Palermo, the capital of Sicily, has been influenced by a diverse range of cultures. As a port in the centre of the Mediterranean, it was a strategic target for every group of empire builders from the Romans to the Bourbons, and it changed hands numerous times until the nineteenth century unification of Italy. Its art and architecture include amongst others Arabic, Chinese and Egyptian influences. The mix of old and new is evident in Palermo, with ancient churches neighbouring trendy roof top bars, and classical opera and modern art fighting for attention. Palermo is a great place to visit at any time of the year except August when the sweltering heat drives many of the 1.3million locals away, and most of the shops and restaurants are closed.
