Orlando Intl Holidays Overview
Orlando, Florida, is located toward the center of this southernmost state on the eastern seaboard of the US. Approximately 228,000 people inhabit this city, with a total of 2 million in the sprawling greater metropolitan area. The University of Central Florida is based here, as well as numerous companies providing services to this region. The city is best known for several major amusement parks.
Numerous luxury hotels are found in the areas of the distinct amusement parks and downtown. Roughly half of the inhabitants here are white. African Americans and Latin Americans are the major share of the remaining population, with small percentages of Asians and Native Americans.
The crime rate is extremely high in the downtown area of the city. There is a diverse music scene with a large Latin American component. There are a number of large shopping malls here. This city is home to the Orlando Magic, a professional basketball team. There are minor league and college teams in several sports here.
The city, incorporated as such in 1885, covers nearly 161 sq. km. today. There is a public bus system and a commuter rail line is under construction to cover this Orange County city and connect through surrounding areas.

Orlando is home to the Florida Citrus Bowl where the Capital One Bowl is played. This college American football match has sixty years of history despite its name being changed. In 2006, the five-day Orlando Hispanic Film Festival began. Awards are given in 11 categories to independent Hispanic films that are entered, including an Audience Award in which film viewers of the general public participate in selecting the winner. Many events and festivals occur in outlying towns in the Orlando area. One of these is the Mount Dora Arts Festival in the town of Mount Dora. Hundreds of thousands of people attend annually. The Zora Neale Hurston Festival of the Arts and Humanities is held annually throughout Orange County, of which this city is the county seat. Some of the events celebrating this socially conscious author and anthropologist are free. Activities include symposiums, concerts, literary events and puppet shows. It is organized by the Association to Preserve the Eatonville Community. Eatonville was this African American’s hometown. This event is annually planned for the final week of January.
