Oklahoma City Holidays Overview
Oklahoma City, OK, is located in the southern plains of the United States. It is the capital and largest city of this Midwestern state. Over 550,000 people live in this city and some 1.2 million inhabit all of the greater metropolitan area. The population is roughly 61% Anglo American, 16% African American and 14% Latin American. 7% of the population is Native American and the remainder are of there ethnicities or mixed descent.
Despite many historic structures being demolished in favor of newer constructions, some historic neighbourhoods are still preserved in the downtown area. In 1889, the area was opened for settlement and 10,000 people quickly settled here, establishing the first town. By 1907, it had become the largest city. It became the capital of the state a few years after the incorporation of Oklahoma into the federated union.
It was in 1928 that oil was discovered here and energy began to drive the local economy. Today the economy has diversified. The Oklahoma River runs through the city. There are also 3 lakes found here. Much of the terrain is flat, with low rolling hills. Prairie grasses and wild flowers are the dominant fauna. To the south is a wooded area. March through May is tornado season, however these events can occur a any time of the year. These phenomena are more frequent here than in any other US city.
A new performing arts centre, several live theatres and various museums are downtown. There are several public parks within the city and a few amusement theme parks located nearby. At least a dozen options for accommodations are in the downtown area alone. There is a similar number of nightclubs and several dozen restaurants and bars. There is also a race track and casino.
Several golf clubs are are in Oklahoma City, as well as various equestrian facilities. There are running and hiking paths in some of the many parks. A professional basketball and women’s football team are based here. A variety of minor league teams in other sports can also be seen by spectators.

More than 1,000 artists and dancers from 100 aboriginal nations come together each June in Oklahoma City for the Red Earth Native American Cultural Festival. This event has been organized here since 1986. It is organized by Red Earth, Inc., which also runs one of the Native American Museums in the area. Since 1967, the last full week in April has been the time for the Festival of the Arts in the downtown area. Culinary artists are found here in addition to performing artists on 4 stages and more than 100 visual artists that come to display their work. The Annual deadCENTER Film Festival began in 2001. It runs from a Wednesday through Sunday in mid-June. The festival seeks to promote independent film.
