Okinawa Holidays Overview
The city of Okinawa is located in the Kyushu (Ryukyu) region of Japan and is the second larges t city in the Okinawa prefecture. The Okinawa prefecture is a group of Islands located in southern Japan. The word “Okinawa” actually means “rope in the open sea” in Japanese. An apt description for the long stretch of islands that make up the Okinawa prefecture. The city together with the Okinawa prefecture has long been occupied by US military bases since the end of world war two. This has often times caused friction between locals and military personnel. The US military currently has about six military facilities which are partially within Okinawa’s city limits. The main facility is the Kadena air base. The city has a population of just under 150, 000. Japanese Kyushu is widely spoken as is English due to the American military personnel. Due to its central location in the Okinawa prefecture, the city acts a link between the northern and southern parts of the island. This has made it a centre for business, culture and government services. The city is mainly a plateau with a few areas inclined to valleys or the ocean. Temperatures average 22 degrees Celsius during the year with good rainfall.
