Noumea Holidays Overview
Noumea is the capital of New Caledonia, where Paris meets the South Pacific. New Caledonia is 1500 km from Australia, 1700 km from New Zealand, and 20000 km away from France. Tourism and mining are the backbone of New Caledonia's economy. The first European to discover New Caledonia was Capt Cook in 1774. Prior to this New Caledonia had been home to the Melanesians for thousands of years. In 1853 the island was officially declared as French, and cobalt, copper and nickel were discovered and mining commenced. Noumea had had a colourful history since being claimed by the French including Missionaries, sailors, military rule, and a stint as the Headquarters of the United States army during WW11. The language of New Caledonia is French, although many of the locals can speak English. Noumea has plenty of tourist attractions including water sports such as sailing, windsurfing, snorkelling and swimming. A great way to get around the city is on the petit train (little train). Noumea's climate is pleasant and mild. There are beautiful parks, museums, galleries, and gorgeous outdoor scenery to be enjoyed here.
