La Guardia Holidays Overview
New York City is the most densely populated urban centre in the United States with more than 8 million inhabitants and close to 20 million in the greater Metropolitan area. The city is composed of 5 boroughs. Queens and Brooklyn are 2 of these and are located on Long Island. Staten Island is connected to Brooklyn to the west by the Brooklyn Bridge, the Bronx is the northernmost borough. Between these boroughs and the Hudson River, sits the island of Manhattan. Locals often refer to Manhattan as “the city” due to it being the commercial and cultural nerve centre. This sliver of an island is sandwiched between the Hudson River and its Bay to the east and south and the East River and Harlem River to its east and north. It is no wider than some 12km at its thickest from east to west and no longer than 30 km from north to south. Nevertheless, it is a world capital of culture, teeming with activity. Known as “the City that Never Sleeps” nightlife can be found through the early morning hours. Some after hours clubs do not open their doors until 2:30 or 3 AM. The extensive public transportation system runs 24-hours a day, 365 days a year. Staten Island, while not accessible by subway, can be reached by bus or the Staten Island Ferry from just below Battery park on the west side of lower Manhattan. A multitude of neighbourhoods have their own characteristics. Historic sites abound here where, in 1614, the Dutch first settled the southern tip of Manhattan. Few Manhattan neighbourhoods are more than a couple of blocks from dozens of eateries with cuisines from around the world. Although 5th Avenue is known for its name brand shops, stores are everywhere. Many prefer the quirkier shops of the East Village below Union Square. Summer in this city filled with museums and theatres brings the streets to life with outdoor events. Concerts and performances can be found throughout the day in distinct parks. Central Park becomes a thriving hub for joggers, roller bladers, picnickers and people engaging in varied sports. Street musicians are found here and elsewhere. The other boroughs have similar events and attractions as well.

New York’ Summer Stage in Central Park is one of the main venues for the many annual open air concerts and performances during the summer in this city. It is in Central Park just off of 72nd Street. Most shows are on Saturday and Sunday afternoons. (http://www.summerstage.org/) One of the newer festivals here began in 2003 and is held for 4 days in November. It is the NY Comedy Festival. This features comedy performances at different venues throughout the city. (http://www.nycomedyfestival.com/) In August, Lincoln Center at the southern end of the Upper West Side holds its Out of Doors series each summer since the early 1970s. Performances include various artistic genres at this cultural centre that is home to Ballet, Opera and other perfoming arts. (http://new.lincolncenter.org/live/index.php/lc-ood) Mentioning annual events, visitors in late June may wish to attend activities during Gay Pride Week. These activities culminate with a parade and street fair on Christopher Street in the Stonewall neighborhood of the West Village. It is here that the Stonewall Riot over gay bashing gave the pride and gay rights movement its start. (http://www.nycpride.org/) Of the many ethnic festivals in dozens of ethnic enclaves one of the oldest in this city is the San Genaro Festival. It is a ten day street fair in Little Italy. It has been held annually for more than 80 years. Italian food sold on the street by dozens of Italian restaurants is a feature of this event. There are rides and games for children as well as live music. (http://www.sangennaro.org/)
