Nelson Holidays Overview
Nelson lies on the northern end of the Southern Island of New Zealand. Nelson was first settled by Europeans in the early 1840's, but has been home to the Maoris for over 1100 years. Nelson was named after Admiral Horatio Nelson, and many of the streets are called after ships and people from the Battle of Trafalgar. Nelson lies on the Tasman Bay, and is surrounded on all other sides by mountains, allowing for plenty of beautiful scenery. Nelson has a lot of ambiance and has retained many of its Victorian buildings. Some of the more notable ones are the Nelson Cathedral, the Victorian Rose Pub, Amber House, Chez Elco, Founders Park Windmill, and Melrose House. Nelson is a popular tourist destination for both Kiwis and overseas visitor and has become increasingly well known for both its adventure and eco tourism. Nelson hosts many festivals and events each year . There are many attractions in and around Nelson to keep holidaymakers happy. These include caving, galleries, museums, markets, shopping, fine dining, plenty of outdoor parks, and neighbouring National Parks such as the Kahurangi National Park and the Abel Tasman National Park.
