Nantes Holidays Overview
Located on the Upper Atlantic Coast in western France, Nantes is a former port town on the banks of the Loire, about fifty five kilometres from the ocean. In the tenth century the Duchy of Brittany was founded in Nantes, and in the nineteenth century it became the birthplace of the public transport system with the invention of the omnibus. Nantes thrived as a shipbuilding centre until the late twentieth century, when the shipyards relocated and it was reinvented as a cultural and educational centre. It has a very young population, with fifty per cent of inhabitants under forty. The Nantes city pass includes entry to galleries, museums and monuments, limited public transport, a city tour, and some shopping discounts.
