Muscat is the capital of the small sultanate of Oman located in the Middle East. It is also the largest city and seat of government of the governorate of Muscat. The city is located on the shores of the Arabian Sea and has historically been an important port for successive civilizations. Today the city is in addition to being a key port, an important trading hub between the Gulf nations, India and the Far East. Petroleum and petroleum products have been integral to the Muscat economy since the early 60s. The population of Muscat currently stands at just under 700, 000 out of which 60% are Omanis while the rest are expatriates from other nations. Non natives of the Arab Peninsula have historically influenced the ethnic make up of Muscat. Actually papers from the British parliament dating back to the 19th century indicate a significant number of Hindu merchants in the city during the time. The predominant language of Muscat is Arabic. English, Gujarati, Balochi and Swahili are also widely spoken by sections of the population. The weather is generally very hot being desert climate. During the hot season from May to September, temperatures can sometimes reach an agonizing 54 degrees Celsius with the average temperatures during this time being 35 degrees Celsius.

Oman’s national day is held in November every year. It also happens to be the birthday of Sultan Qaboos Bin Said the absolute monarch of Oman. The celebrations are marked with street fanfares that include food and street fairs as well as fireworks. Being a Muslim nation there is of course also the Eid festivals every September. The Muscat Festival held in January and February every year showcases Oman’s culture and heritage.
