Moruya Holidays Overview
Moruya is a small town with a population of about 2 500, and lies 306 km south of Sydney, and about 10 km inland from the coast. Moruya is about a 4 hour drive from Sydney, and a 2 hour drive from Canberra. This historic town lies on the Moruya River and is famous for its quarry mines, which have not only provided the building blocks for many of the town's historic buildings, but also for other places of importance like the pylons of the Sydney Harbour Bridge and the Cenotaph in Martin Place.
Moruya was discovered by Europeans in 1827 and white settlements were started a year later. In 1851 gold was discovered 60 km upriver at Araluen and Moruya became a popular town for supplying this rich goldfield. The town's economy is now drawn from dairy and cattle farming, timber, fresh produce, seafood, and tourism. This town has retained and restored many of its historic buildings and combined with the Moruya river and the mountains in the background is a very picturesque town.
There are many things to see and do around the town of Moruya. The river provides plenty of water activities such as fishing, swimming, and picnics. Other attractions include the Saturday morning markets, a museum, eating, shopping, National parks, and galleries. Sports enthusiasts have a great range to select from including horse riding, kayaking, lawn bowls, tennis, golf, motor sports, go-karts, and sky diving.

Moruya Rodeo is held on New Year's Day at the Moruya Showgrounds. The rodeo provides great events such as steer wrestling, barrel racing, bronco riding, calf rope and tie, and of course clowns. The rodeo also has a bar, rides (not on bulls), food stalls and a side show alley. Fun for all the family. Better still, the gates don't open until the very civilised hour of 1 pm leaving plenty of time to sleep off New Year's Eve partying.
River of Art Festival is held in May for 8 days and includes art exhibitions throughout the entire Shire. The festival also includes word, singing, and film events. Adults and school children together contribute to the exhibitions. Dancing and rock'n'roll are also on offer.
Moruya Jazz Festival runs for 3 days towards the end of October. Many styles of jazz are represented and artists perform at many venues around town including clubs, pubs, and restaurants. The Moruya Jazz festival caters for all age groups and is considered one of the most inexpensive Jazz festivals in Australia.
