Montpellier Holidays Overview
Montpellier is a city in the Languedoc-Roussillon region of France. It was founded in the tenth century and by the medieval period had become a prosperous town and a centre of trade. Europe’s first medical school was founded in Montpellier in the twelfth century. The population of the town increased noticeably when French settlers left independent Algiers in the 1960s and settled in Montpellier. Modern day Montpellier is a busy, thriving, self confident city and almost a third of the population are students. It is a pedestrian friendly city, with a pedestrianised historic centre and over a thousand bikes that can be borrowed to ride around the area. Montpellier is a rapidly expanding city with a modern transport network, including high speed trams that crisscross the centre.
