Monkey Mia Holidays Overview
Monkey Mia lies approximately 850 km north of Perth, and about 26 km from the nearest township of Denham. Monkey Mia is located on the Peron Peninsula and is world famous for the bottle nose dolphins who swim in to play with the humans there on a daily basis. Monkey Mia is a part of the Shark Bay World Heritage Area, in Western Australia's Coral Coast. Monkey Mia was named after a pearling trawler that anchored in the waters there in the late 19th Century. The population of Monkey Mia has always been small, due in part to a lack of water and rain. Before the dolphins, pearling was a local industry. Now more than 100 000 visitors a year, both tourists and and marine biologists alike, come to Monkey Mia to observe the dolphins. The waters around Monkey Mia were officially declared a marine park in 1990. Although there is only the one place to stay in Monkey Mia, there are plenty of facilities for the visitor. There is a visitor centre, jetty, boat ramp, drinking water, public toilets, public telephone and BBQ's. The Monkey Mia Dolphin Resort has Internet access, restaurant, cafe, swimming pool, and a tennis court.
