Port Louis is the capital city of Mauritius, a small Island to the east of Madagascar. It was founded by the French in the early 18th century as a stop over for their ships as they navigated the Cape of Good Hope. Actually, the city is named after the French King Louis XV. The economy of Port Louis is dominated by the Port which handles most of the international trade. Tourism is a major contributor to Port Louis economy. The population mainly comprises of descendants of Indian labourers hired from India over a hundred years ago. Over 75% of the population are mixed origin Indians whereas the rest are from Africa. Due to its intricate and fascinating setting, Port Louis has over the years attracted a number of renowned writers such as Mark Twain and Nicolas Pike. The city of Port Louis is surrounded by the Port Louis Moka range, a mountain range. The city experiences its highest amount of rainfall during the months of December through to March. This is also the hottest period when it is extremely hot and humid. The coldest and driest months are from June to September.

The major event and indubitable crown puller is the classic Duchess of York Cup, an annual horse race that takes place at the Champ de Mars Racecourse every April. Coming in a close second is The Barbe Cup, another horse racing event at the Champ de Mars every July.
