The capital of Provence, an area in the South East corner of France, Marseille once had a bad reputation. Marseille is the home of the French National Anthem, La Marseillaise, which was originally sung by citizens from Marseille marching north to defend Paris during the French Revolution. The city was founded by the Greeks as a trading post, and it is still an important Mediterranean port today.

Festival of Marseille
The Festival of Marseille tales place for a month every year during June and July. Events and performances take place in at least twelve different locations throughout the city, and these include exhibitions of dance, music, theatre and cinema. The festival organisers try to keep contemporary arts accessible to all by retaining low ticket prices, even though the performances become more spectacular each year.

Five Continents Jazz Festival
Held over a week in July in the garden of the Palais Longchamp, the Five Continents Jazz Festival showcases jazz musicians from Europe, Africa, Asia, and North and South America. The festival was launched in 2000 and admission is free on the first night.

Open 13
Open 13 is a professional indoor tennis tournament that takes place over a week towards the end of February. The venue for the tournament is Marseille’s Palais des Sport, and it attracts some of the top names in professional men’s tennis.
