Longreach Holidays Overview
Longreach lies 676 km west of Rockhampton, or 1184 km from Brisbane, and is the largest town in central Queensland. The town's population is roughly 3 000. Longreach lies on the Thomson River and was actually named after the 'long reach' of the river. The Thomson River was discovered in 1847, the Longreach region was explored in 1861, and by 1863 cattle and sheep farming had commenced which are the backbone of the region's economy. Longreach became an important connecting town with the rail connecting the town to the coast in 1892. In 1920 Longreach became the centre of operations for an airline company that is now known as Qantas. Longreach boomed in the 1920's with the wool industry. Holiday makers have plenty of things to see and do in and around Longreach, with both the outback and aviation history well represented. The Qantas Museum located at Longreach airport is well worth a visit. Those who enjoy the great outdoors will enjoy the fishing or cruising on the Thomson River and the beautiful surrounding National Parks. Longreach is also home of the School of Distance Education and the Australian Agricultural College.
