Lismore is on the Far North Coast of NSW, 764 kms from Sydney, or a 9 hour drive, and a 2 1/2 hour drive south from Brisbane. Lismore lies on the Wilsons River and is surrounded National Parks, State Forests, and World Heritage listings. These parks are perfect for walking, picnics, biking, and 4WDings. Lismore was discovered and settled by Europeans in 1845. Lismore and the surrounding areas of the Richmond River were initially settled by cedar cutters who were logging the local cedar trees. Dairy farmers and settlers soon followed. Today Lismore is a country town that embraces tourism and the surrounding beautiful nature. The climate in Lismore is considered to be subtropical with very mild winters. Lismore Lantern Parade is held on the weekend of the winter solstice (in June). This festival is very family frinedly and has specific activities for the kids. The first Lantern Parade was held in 1994 and has grown in popularity since then with a record crowd of 20 000. The lantern is considered to be a symbol of global hope and community optimism. The lantern parade is seen as a symbolic "lighting the heart of the city" in a multicultural and contemporary manner. As well as a parade, the other major events are an amazing fiery finale and huge street party. This festival first started in 1994 and since then has become extremely popular for the locals, visitors, and those who are interested in all things hemp. As well as the Mardigrass Parade where everyone is dressed in fancy dress with a hemp theme there are market stalls, hemp expos, hemp products, food stalls and entertainers. There are also workshops, speeches, art exhibitions, hemp fashion shows, drug law information exchanges and often a political demonstration.
