Lightning Ridge Holidays Overview
Lightning Ridge is located in outback NSW, 767 km northwest 1from Sydney, and 750 km from Brisbane. Lightning Ridge is probably most famous for being home to the rare and beautiful black opal gemstone. This harsh desert town has been built on the back of opal mining and many of the 1 800 residents are miners.
Lightning Ridge has more to offer than opal mines. Other attractions for the tourist include an astronomy monument, museums, Artesian baths, golf course, archery club, pistol club, and of course shopping and fossicking for opals. Lightning Ridge is famous for its stinking hot summers where temperatures can reach the high 40's. This is probably a better town to visit from Easter onwards, when the Celsius has started to slide.
The town now known as Lightning Ridge was discovered as a source of opals in 1902 by prospector Charles Nettleton. Originally known as Wallangulla, it was renamed Lightning Ridge after WW1.

Lightning Ridge Easter Show has an enormous amount of fun and unusual activities for the visitor including the Lightning Ridge Goat Races and the Lightning Ridge Black Opal Rodeo. Both of these are hugely popular events. The Black Opal Rodeo is held on the Friday from about 9am to 10 pm. The Goat Races are run on the Saturday, and the main street of town is used as the raceway. Punters are able to purchase a goat and buggy to participate in the races.
Lightning Ridge Opal Festival is a 4 day festival held in the last weekend of July and has become a well known international gem and jewellery show. Not only are opals on display, but other gemstones, beads and original hand crafted jewellery. Of course, there is always spectacular examples of black opal to ogle at. This 4 day event is not just for jewellers but miners, lapidarists, buyers, and gem lovers who are all interested in the latest information, jewellery trends an equipment.
