Leeds Bradford Holidays Overview
A former industrial town in West Yorkshire, Leeds is one of the more cosmopolitan cities in the North of England. It grew rapidly in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries due to the industrial revolution and its role in the cloth trade, and other industries based on steam engines, leather, chemicals and pottery. The character of Leeds changed after the First Word War, with industry giving way to academia, as the city became known for its universities. These days Leeds is best described as a commercial centre, with retailing and offices providing the bulk of employment. Leeds is a thriving modern city, with packed shopping streets and arcades, and all the major designer labels. The social scene is also lively with plenty of good bars, clubs and restaurants. Leeds makes a great base for exploring the rest of West Yorkshire.
