Launceston Holidays Overview
Launceston is a very historic town located in the north of Tasmania, and it shows. Beautiful old world buildings are situated along the South Esk River, and for those who like to walk, there are plenty of gorgeous walking trails to keep you busy. The temperate climate will mean that you will never overheat while walking around this town. Launceston has a population of about 100 000 and is about 198 kms north of Tasmania's capital city Hobart, or roughly a 2 to 2 1/2 hour drive. Launceston is the third oldest city in Australia, and was first settled in 1806 by Governor King who sent soldiers there to start a settlement before the French could. Launceston is located in an extremely fertile farming region and quickly became a busy agricultural town. When coal, silver and gold were discovered in Northern Tasmania in the 1870's, the town became even more wealthy, and it is in this time frame that many of the splendid buildings of architectural importance were built. Today, Launceston has many tourist attractions of its own, along with being a stepping stone to the Tamar Valley. Those who are into alpine activities such as rock climbing are just 55 kms from Ben Lomond National Park. Tourists who are keen to spot the native wildlife can do so at Narawntapu National Park.
