The city was first inhabited in the early 18th century and has been ruled by the Al Sabah clan since then. Most recently in 1990, the country of Kuwait was invaded by Iraq forces and the city became a battlefield and much of its infrastructure destroyed. However, today the city is a symbol of economic prosperity with modern buildings, hotels, shopping malls and offices.
The language in use is predominantly Arabic though English is also widely spoken as a result of the large expatriate community that lives in Kuwait.
