Kunming Holidays Overview
The city of Kunming is located in the Yunnan province in southern China. It is a prefecture level city and the capital city of Yunnan province. It is affectionately referred to as the “city of eternal spring” due to its temperate climate throughout the year. As the capital city of Yunnan province, Kunming serves as the nerve centre of the region’s politics, economy, communication and culture. A number of educational institutions museums and galleries are located in Kunming. The city served as a Chinese Military Centre during the second world war. It has been ruled by various dynasties over the years beginning with the Dian Kingdom in the 3rd century BC., later the Han dynasty, Kingdom of Dali, and the Ming and Qing dynasties. There are 25 ethnic minorities living in Yunnan. The region has a population of more five million inhabitants out of which over 80% are Han. The main language in use is the Kunming Dialect which is quite similar to standard Chinese Mandarin.

Kunming hosts the Big Screen Festival which focuses on Chinese and Italian Cinema from late November to mid December. Direct flights from Australia to Kunming are quire rare. The most viable travel option is to fly direct from Sydney Kingsford to Guanzhou or Shanghai and then connect to Kunming. Qantas and Singapore Airlines operate direct flights to Guangzhou and Shanghai. It takes an average of 10 hours to fly direct to Shanghai from Sydney and 9 hours from Sydney to Guangzhou.
