Kalbarri Holidays Overview
Kalbarri is located 591 kilometres north of Pert in Western Australia. A ‘Holiday Mecca’, Kalbarri is a place to relax and enjoy some of the most breath taking scenery in Australia. There is so much to do in the region from swimming, to going fishing, whale watching and surfing. This is one holiday destination that you can spend 2 weeks exploring and still not see everything.
The history of this region extends back to 1629 when the Dutch East India trading ship ‘Batavia’, was wrecked offshore. Two mutinous crew members were put ashore at Wittecarra Creek near Bluff Point to the south of Kalbarri and they are believed to be the first European settlers to this country.
The name ‘Kalbarri’ is thought to originate from an aboriginal word meaning ‘edible seed’. Venture out of Kalbarri and see the nearby gorges and coastal cliffs. Over 200,000 people visit Kalbarri each year and it really earns the title of ‘holiday Mecca’.

The Kalbarri Canoe and Cray Carnival is held each May. Join the local community and participate in this fun filled weekend carnival. Canoes are supplied by Canoeing Western Australia, so with a little training you are all set to go. The events don’t stop with relay and individual canoe races, ‘Pirates of the Murchison’, novelty races and crayfish and rides.

Grab some friends and make up a team of anglers to enter the Kalbarri Sports Fishing Classic. Pick a fish of choice, a line and off you go. For the game fisherman, there are three species of mackerel, six species of tuna, Samson fish, yellowtail king fish, snapper, trevally and cobia. Are you interested in bottom fishing? The Airing of the Quilts gala day and is held in Northampton. Browse through the displays of the various quilts of all shapes, sizes, colours and creations as they blow in the breeze in the town centre. Exhibits from local indigenous artists are on display. See how it was done in years gone by with displays of sewing machines dating back to 1893 and 1954. A tapestry and doll exhibition, demonstrations of lace making and market stalls of craft and accessories, there is plenty to see.
