Izmir Holidays Overview

Izmir is Turkey’s third largest city and is a crucial port on the Agean Sea. Its setting is spectacular; built around the bay with a mountainous backdrop. The city is generally very modern in appearance, with contemporary avenues of glass fronted apartments and office blocks. Although there are traces of an older town to be found, most of these were destroyed by fire in 1923. Once known as Smyrna, Izmir was seen as the most cosmopolitan and westernised of Turkish cities, attracting merchants, traders, foreign diplomats, and sailors. After the end of the First World War, Izmir was invaded by the Greek Army, who were finally defeated in 1922, although the final mopping-up operations caused the disastrous fire. The waterfront is the perfect place to while away the time, with plenty of cafes, and the two millennium old castle is worth a visit, as much for the sweeping views as for the building itself. The city also has a variety of museums and a labyrinthine bazaar.
