Indianapolis Holidays Overview
Indianapolis is the capital of Indiana, a Midwestern US state. It is the 3rd largest city in this part of the country. It has a population of around 800,000 people. More than 2 million people reside in the greater metropolitan area. More than 60% of the population is white and roughly 25% is of African descent. The small Latin American population, 6.5 %, is rapidly growing. The rest are of other ethnic groups. There are 6 cultural districts officially designated by the city. They are rich in diverse ethnic and historic resources. Aboriginal occupants were driven out of the area in the 1820s. The city was designed shortly afterwards to serve as state capital. It is right at the centre of the state. Two waterways cut across this city. The topography, like most of the Midwest, is fairly flat. Summers can be hot and winters are cold, occasionally dipping as low as -18 degrees Celsius. There are several historic sites in this city. Much of the US and Canada can be reached from here within 24 hours on the roads that interconnect here. The city is most famed for the Indianapolis 500, an annual automobile race. Several sports teams are also located in the downtown area. There are roughly 200 shops in and around the centre of the city and upwards of 250 restaurants downtown alone. Dozens of hotels and bed & breakfasts are right at the centre of this state capital and others are in outlying neighborhoods. The State House Building, which dates back to 1888, is one sight tourists may want to see while here. It has a classical Renaissance Revival design. It’s made of limestone with marble and granite interiors and a glass dome.
