Invercargill Holidays Overview
Invercargill is a beautiful township located on the south coast of the South Island of New Zealand. The southern gateway to New Zealand, Invercargill is a city on the go. Excellent shopping, eateries and restaurants and late night entertainment, the city doesn’t stop. Fanning out from the central hub, are tree lined roads with elegant homes interspersed with bungalows.
In the late 1700s, the first Europeans to set foot on the south island were sealers. The early 1800s saw others arrive intent on harvesting flax with whalers arriving from 1829. Over 600 earlier, the Maori arrived attracted by the bountiful fish and birds. Growth in European settlement prompted a petition for a township in 1856 and it was named Invercargill.
Invercargill has much to offer in a holiday destination. Travel the southern scenic rout to Curio Bay to see the dolphins or across to the Port Craig viaduct. Explore the outer boundaries of the city. The New River Estuary, the ocean and green pastures are as pretty as a postcard.

The Southland Marathon is held each year in November. Starting at the small coastal fishing town of Riverton, the course travels along the Southland Plains finally arriving at Invercargill. Events on the day include 5 kilometre run/walk, 10 kilometre run, half marathon and the main event, the full marathon. $10,000 prize money for the first male or female over the line under the specified time limit is on offer if you are feeling energetic.
