Hobart Holidays Overview
Hobart is the capital city of Tasmania and is separated from mainland Australia south of Victoria. Known as the ‘City of Sails and Sandstone’ Hobart is surrounded by hills, bushland and water. A perfect base for exploring the southern region of Tasmania, most attractions are within an easy day’s touring.
First sighted by Abel Tasman in 1642, the island of Tasmania was originally named ‘Van Diemen’s Land’. Only the second European settlement in Australia, the region at the mouth of the River Derwent was settled in 1790. The town Hobart was declared in 1812 and became the capital of Van Diemen’s Land. A centre of ship building, Hobart was also a thriving whaling port.
Today, Hobart is a popular holiday destination with many activities and sights to see. Browse the outdoor Salamanca Markets, take a drive out to one of Hobart’s mountains, tour the vineyards or enjoy the many wonderful bushwalking trails.
