Hervey Bay Holidays Overview
Hervey Bay is a located 300 kilometres north of Brisbane and is a beautiful coastal city. The main access to Fraser Island, Hervey Bay is most famous as one of the best places to view the migrating humpback whales. On the picturesque foreshore, the Esplanade offers great walking and cycle paths beside picnic and play areas.
First discovered in 1770 by Captain James Cook as he sailed up the east coast of Australia, Cook wrongly assumed that Fraser Island was joined to the mainland. He named the Bay ‘Hervey Bay’ and did not venture further in due to it being so shallow. Matthew Flinders sailed past twice before venturing into the Bay in 1799 and became the first European to step ashore at Hervey Bay. The first settlement of Hervey Bay did not occur until the 1850s.
Today, the sub-tropical climate and the abundance of natural assets has turned Hervey Bay into a fantastic holiday destination. The Great Sandy Strait, world heritage listed Fraser Island, the bay and the wetlands provide opportunities to venture forth and discover this region. A constant flow of day trippers and holiday makers pass through the region every season making Hervey Bay one of Queensland’s most accessible cities.

The Mary Poppins Festival in the Park celebrates one of the world’s most famous nannies. Working her magic, Richmond and Warf Streets are transformed into Cherry Tree Lane each June. A fantasy experience for the young and the old, join in the festivities. Dress up in your best nanny gear, grab a pram and compete in the madcap Great Mary Poppins Nanny Challenge. All equipment such as nanny uniform, pram and baby must be traditional as part of the honourable and respectable rules. Although, mad cap hilarity aside, it is always a hotly contested race. Famous for the migration of humpback whales each year, celebrate with the locals at the Hervey Bay Whale Festival in August. Two weekends of festivals make this a month of celebrating the sea and its creatures. The Blessing of the Fleet and the Food, Wine and Jazz Festival kicks off at the Urangan Harbour on the first weekend. The fun isn’t over yet, the next weekend is the Family Fun Festival at the Hervey Bay Seafront Oval. Entertainment, carnival rides, market and food stalls and the sun sets over the street parade followed by fireworks. This is a month of merriment that you will have to be there to see.
