Hamilton Holidays Overview
Hamilton is a substantial rural centre located 291 kilometres west of Melbourne in the Victoria’s south west. Featuring attractive tree lined streets, Hamilton boasts a couple of extraordinary Churches that are found at ‘Church Hill’. Calling itself the ‘Wool Capital of the World’ gives and indication of the regions main production. Exploration of the region occurred as early as 1836 with the Henty brothers moving their livestock inland in 1837. By 1838-1839, more settlers were arriving and in 1839 the government surveyor recommended the township for development. The original indigenous inhabitants of the Hamilton region were the Gunditjmara people in the south, Tjapwurong people in the north and the Bunganditj people to the west. This rural region sits on a volcanic basalt plain with a broad and deep valley formed by Grange Burn. An enchanting area worth a visit just for the scenery, the Wanon River winds it way through the region emptying into Lake Hamilton. http://www.travelvictoria.com.au/hamilton/
