Hamilton Island Holidays Overview
Hamilton Island is beautiful one day and perfect the next. Located on the Great Barrier Reef, Hamilton Island is one of the 74 Whitsunday Islands. Glorious weather, crystal clear waters, gorgeous beaches, breath taking coral reefs are just a few reasons to visit. One of the icons of Australia’s holiday destinations, Hamilton Island has an attractive climate all year round.
Captain James Cook travelled up the eastern coast of Australia in 1770 passing through the Whitsunday Passage on Sunday 4th June. The Whitsundays were named by Cook as this date was the seventh Sunday after Easter or White Sunday, hence Whitsundays. Stepping back in time prior to the last Ice Age, the Islands were connected to the mainland and would have been prominent mountains in the area. With the melting of the polar caps, the valleys were filled with the water and partially submerging the Islands. This means that the Whitsunday Islands are drowned mountains.
A visit to Hamilton Island is one of non stop entertainment with a range of over 40 activities. Surrounded by water there are many water sports to enjoy such as beach cruises, water skiing, wind surfing, catamaran and yacht sailing. Try a land based activity for a change of pace such as nature walks, fishing or a scenic flight. If a spot of shopping is more your style, wander through the over 20 boutiques and specialty stores on the Island.
