The rise of timber milling in the hinterland progressed over the next 100 years. Today, the Gold Coasts main industry is tourism and it is one of Australia’s premier holiday destinations.
The beach going culture of the Gold Coast has not abated over the years, if anything they are still sun and wave worshipers. Life Saving and surfing are both institutions on the Gold Coast. The natural wonders on the doorstep of the Gold Coast in the hinterland, are popular with tourists and locals including regular visitors from Brisbane and Northern New South Wales. The Magic Millions Racing Carnival is held each January and is Queensland’s premier horse racing carnival. With 40 events of eighteen days, there is something for everyone. Horse buyers from around the world as well as leading Australian trainers attend the Magic Millions Sale; the catalogue has a proven record of producing excellent gallopers. The Magic Millions Feature Race is the highlight of the racing schedule, although the competition in the Fashions on the Field does run a very close second. This glamorous Carnival is one not to be missed.

The Wintersun Festival is in June and held on the New South Wales – Queensland Border is held in June. Border Towns Coolangatta, Kirra and Tweed Heads play host to this non stop celebration of rock’n’roll music, all things Elvis, classic cars and don’t forget the dancing. Two weeks of day and night events such as concerts, dancing, dance workshops, classic and vintage car parades and the magic of the street parade. This is an event for the whole family with lots of entertainment that the kids will love.

Engines are revving in October for the Gold Coast SuperGP. This motor racing carnival almost stops the city both on and off the track. Racing through the streets of Surfers Paradise, cheering fans on all sides and above in the highrises, a race with sun above and beautiful beaches what more could ask for in a race. It is not all about the racing, there is a lot of entertainment throughout the event that doesn’t involve racing. The main criteria of the day – have fun!
