Nearby Kaiti Beach is the first European landing place in New Zealand. Captain Cook first set foot here in 1769. Settlement in the area was not established till 1831 and the town that developed was named Gisborne in 1870 and eventually became a city in 1955.
The rich alluvial river flats combined with the mild temperatures make this region ideal for agriculture. A wealth of produce is available such as maize, grapes, kiwifruit, citrus and subtropical fruits. Pinus Radiata forests throughout the region is now a major land use with the hilly country more suited for grazing of cattle, sheep, deer and goats.

The Te Unga Mai, the arrival, is a celebration of voyaging traditions and remembers the first meeting between Lieutenant James Cook, his crew and Tangata Whenua of Turanganui a Kiwi. An annual event held each October; these events are a lead up to 2019 which will be the 250th anniversary of this first meeting of cultures.
