Gisborne Holidays Overview
Gisborne is a beautiful seaside town on the East Coast of the North Island, New Zealand. It’s call to fame is that Gisburne is the first city in the world to see the sun each day. Break away from the grind of the big city and enjoy the relaxing lifestyle of this town. Nearby Kaiti Beach is the first European landing place in New Zealand. Captain Cook first set foot here in 1769. Settlement in the area was not established till 1831 and the town that developed was named Gisborne in 1870 and eventually became a city in 1955. The rich alluvial river flats combined with the mild temperatures make this region ideal for agriculture. A wealth of produce is available such as maize, grapes, kiwifruit, citrus and subtropical fruits. Pinus Radiata forests throughout the region is now a major land use with the hilly country more suited for grazing of cattle, sheep, deer and goats. http://www.gisbornenz.com

The Te Unga Mai, the arrival, is a celebration of voyaging traditions and remembers the first meeting between Lieutenant James Cook, his crew and Tangata Whenua of Turanganui a Kiwi. An annual event held each October; these events are a lead up to 2019 which will be the 250th anniversary of this first meeting of cultures. This is a memorable event for the whole family of the birth of today’s New Zealand. http://www.teungamai.com The BW Camping Festival is held in December and January and is divided into four different camps to cater for all styles of having fun. The size of the festival has grown since its inception with only one camp. Sun and Surf, great music and hanging with your friends, and camping next to the beach. Held over the New Year period, drop in on the Rhythm and Vines New Years Eve Festival and be the first ones to celebrate the New Year in the world. It doesn’t get much better than that. There is so much happening at the BW Camping Festival, you will just have to go and find out for yourself. http://www.bwcampgrounds.co.nz/ Spend New Year in Gisborne at the Rhythm and Vines Festival and be the first in the world to see the sun on the 1st January. The first event in 2003 was a not so humble New Years Eve party at the Waiohika Estate vineyard, hence the name ‘Rhythm and Vines’. It has grown to a now 3 day party of funky music, fireworks, bright laser shows and of course very impressive talent. Enjoy a memorable New Years Eve at the Rhythm and Vines Festival. http://www.rhythmandvines.co.nz/
