Genting Holidays Overview
Genting is a Las Vegas-like resort city which is situated in the midst of the rugged hilly terrain that is located at a distance of 58 km, north east of the city of Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia.
This resort city is a low- budget family- friendly entertainment hot spot that is populated with casinos and theme parks. In fact Genting is the most prominent gambling center in largely Muslim state of Malaysia.
The credit for the creation of Genting is attributed to a local Malaysian entrepreneur, the late Tan Sri Lim Goh Tong who got the idea of creation of the hill resort while he was working on a hydro-electric power project at the popular hill resort of Cameron Highlands which during colonial times was patronized by the British as they sought refuge from the searing tropical heat at this cool hill top resort. Tan Sri Lim Goh Tong then decided to create a similar resort in the hilly areas located close to Kuala Lumpur for he believed that this resort would be accessible to the local population who would enjoy escaping to its cool environs.
Tan Sri Lim Goh Tong then set up the Genting Highlands Berhad Company which embarked on creating this resort around the 1800 meter high peak Gunung Ulu Kali which is located close to Kuala Lumpur in the midst of hilly terrain which is covered by lush tropical vegetation.
In 1969 the Prime Minister of Malaysia YTM Tunku Abdul Rahman laid the foundation stone for the first hotel, The Highlands Hotel which was to be built at the Genting Resort. In the four years that preceded this event an access road leading to the resort had also been constructed.
The Highlands Hotel was the first hotel to be built at the resort which today is home to five hotels namely the Genting Hotel, Resort Hotel, Highlands Hotel, Theme Park Hotel and First World Hotel. Aside from these hotels which are all connected via a labyrinth of passageways and corridors the resort is also home to two apartment blocks and the Awana Genting Highlands Golf and Country Resort.
In 1997, the resort launched a cable car system that transports visitors to the hill top, christened Genting Skyway the system which is longest cable car in Malaysia and South East Asia offers a picturesque ride up to the resort.
Since the resort is located at an altitude of 1800 meters above sea level, temperatures in Genting tend to be a good 5-10°C lower than in Kuala Lumpur and generally hover around the 15-25°C range all year round. On a clear day, the resort offers are stunning views of the surrounding valley.When it rains the resort is usually enveloped in mist and clouds as visibility drops to zero but the ambience is absolutely ethereal especially if you are riding the cable car to and from the resort.

The theme parks are additionally equipped with an Arena of Stars which is an amphitheater that is used to hosts several concerts, shows and award ceremonies all year round. These events usually feature Chinese, Western and even Bollywood luminaries. The amphitheater can comfortably host 6000 people and in recent times it has held ceremonies like the Zee Cine Awards, Lux Style Awards and the MTV Asia Awards.
