Genova Holidays Overview
Wedged between the mountains and the sea in the North West corner of Italy, Genoa is often overlooked by tourists. This may be because its ancient port is still busy, meaning it is dominated by cranes and warehouses, but the medieval old town is one of the best in Europe and there is plenty for visitors to see and do. The town of six hundred thousand inhabitants sprawls along the coast and up into the hills. Genoa was heavily bombed when occupied by Germany during the Second World War, and there is still an unexploded British bomb in the San Lorenzo Cathedral. Since its year as European Capital of Culture in 2004, Genoa has begun an extensive rejuvenation programme overseen by architect Renzo Piano. Of the many things originating in Genoa, pesto, a sauce made from crushed basil leaves, parmesan and pine nuts, along with Italian football, are the best known. Notable Genovese inhabitants included Giuseppe Mazzini who spearheaded the movement for Italian unity in the nineteenth century.

This tradition dates back to the fifteenth century. http://turismo.comune.genova.it/ International Poetry Festival The festival takes place in June and is the most important poetry event in Italy.
