Mount Gambier Holidays Overview
Mount Gambier lies halfway between Adelaide, 450 km away, and Melbourne, 435 km away, and is just inside the border of South Australia. The city lies 27 km from the coast and the entire town is built around an extinct volcano. This region is known as the Limestone Coast, due to the massive amounts of limestone lying underground. The erosion of this limestone has led to an extensive underground cave system. Many of the historic buildings around Mount Gambier are built from the limestone from these caves. Mount Gambier was discovered in 1829 by Stephen Henty who returned in 1840 to settle a squat. Mt Gambier has a population of 30 000 and is the second largest city in South Australia. Mount Gambier has a very unique geography and is famous for its caves and sinkholes, and the surrounding regions. Holiday makers have plenty to select from including exploring caves, volcanic craters, lakes, underground waterways, visiting wineries, walking, swimming, golf, water skiing, and galleries and museums. The Mount Gambier region is also known for its dairy industry.
