Fort Lauderdale Holidays Overview
Fort Lauderdale is located on the Atlantic coast of southern Florida, the southernmost state on the Atlantic Seaboard of the US. Since the 1990s, this city has seen rapid development of a performing arts district in the downtown near the New River. There is a River Walk promenade area here with shops and restaurants as well as some bars. Literally thousands of restaurants and more than 100 nightclubs are found in and around this seaside city.
Thirty seven miles of white sandy beaches sink into a generally calm blue sea. While the summer can get fiercely hot and humid, late September through June is almost always pleasant. Temperatures rarely drop below 10 degrees Celsius on the coldest of days in January or February. Other than due to rain or extreme hurricane events (July through October), there may never be less than a week in the entire year when water sports are not a comfortable option.
The city itself is home to nearly 200,000 people, although it is part of a broader southern Florida area of some 5 million inhabitants. 20-25% of the population was born abroad. Of this, nearly 70% is from Latin America. There is a local bus system and 2 stops in this city on the Broward County commuter rail system. It is difficult however, to travel about the sprawling southern Florida area without a car.
The city and the beaches here are popular for College students on spring break coming down from the north east. It is also known as a popular resort area for gays and lesbians as well as a retirement area for northerners seeking to escape from harsh winters.
Between 1835 and 1842, the Second Seminole War was largely fought in this area between local aboriginal peoples and the US. The forts built at that time served to inspire the location’s name. Major Lauderdale oversaw the construction of the first of the fort structures.
