Emerald Holidays Overview
Emerald is located in the Central Highlands and is considered to be the ‘gateway’ to the Sapphire Gemfields. It is located on the ‘The Great Inland Way’ or Capricorn and Gregory Highway. A lush emerald green hill north of the town called Emerald Downs Hill is the original of the towns name of Emerald. The town was established in 1879 as a base for the building of the western railway. Progressive construction has increased the growth of the city with the Fairbairn Dam and Emerald Irrigation Scheme built in 1972. Large scale coal mining in the Bowen Basin in 1977 has significantly had an impact on Emerald. Explore Emerald and venture out to the surrounding region. A few of the activities to enjoy are bird watching, canoeing, cycling and kayaking. Famous as a major sunflower producer, Emerald has on display the world’s biggest Van Gogh sunflower painting on an easel at Morton Park. http://www.emerald.qld.gov.au
