East London Holidays Overview

East London is a city that is located on the south east coast of South Africa which borders the Indian Ocean. This small, friendly city lies between the Buffalo River and the Nahoon River and is the country’s only river port. East London was initially known as Port Rex and its history can be traced to the mid-1800’s when the British settlers lay down their roots here. These British settlers at first fought battles with the native Xhosa people but then they used the port of East London as a supply port for their military headquarters located nearby in King William’s Town. The British then went on to build several forts in the area ( Fort Glamorgan, Fort Murray, Fort White, Fort Hare and Fort Beaufort) and the entire area comprising of East London and King William’s Town soon came to be known as British Kaffaria. The port city of East London which is located at the mouth of the Buffalo River has been functioning as a port since 1870 and the construction of a railway line on the east bank of the river gave further impetus to the development of this port which came to be instituted as a city in 1914. East London then prospered and developed through the ages but it suffered a decline during the years of apartheid especially during the 1980’s when sanctions were imposed on South Africa by the international community. However once apartheid ended in South Africa in the mid-1990’s the city received much foreign investment and today is a lively coastal city in South Africa which is world renowned for its many gorgeous beaches which offer many opportunities for sports like surfing, fishing and cruising.
